Gary's gonna win." There are a handful of names one could argue are "rock stars" in our field … and Gary Rydstrom would be one of them. The man rose the ranks in just a few years at Skywalker Sound to be nominated twice for an Oscar in 1992, winning for Terminator 2. Then he won another Oscar for Jurassic Park just a couple years later. He has won seven Oscars so far. And of course, his job on Toy Story was just as fantastic. There was no question he would win. So I went to the awards prepared to hate Gary Rydstrom. That evening, the Skywalker Sound table was near ours, and I kept an eye on Mr. Rydstrom. At one point, before the awards had started, I saw him waiting dutifully for his wife by the restrooms, so I took that moment to approach him. "Hi, Gary... I'm Steve Lee" was all I got out before he shook my hand and said how happy he was to meet me, what a great job our shop does, and then he asked specific questions about our work —mentioning how he could tell we really tried to match the spirit of Jimmy Macdonald (the Disney sound legend) in A Goofy Movie. At that moment, I thought to myself: Well, dammit... I can't hate him now. Even after Toy Story did indeed win. I quickly learned that Gary is one of the kindest, generous and extremely modest people you could know. He has become a fierce supporter of the Hollywood Sound Museum—he's one of our first guests on our new podcast, which is hosted by myself and Oscar-winning sound editor Richard Anderson (whom I profiled in the Summer 2020 issue of Wavelength). I also look forward to interviewing Gary for an upcoming issue of this magazine. So, many thanks to the Motion Picture Sound Editors for having the Golden Reels every year.
