m ot ion p ictu re s o u n d e d i to r s I 65 out, as a lead and as a supervisor, how I was going to staff so that I could oversee both titles. I needed to do what was needed from me as a supervisor, while also making sure I had a support team to help me execute the day-to-day of the job— making the dialogue as seamless as possible for both teams. I would say that was the most challenging experience in my game career. I've had difficult titles to work on, but having to juggle both of those at the same time was tough. Now, as a manager, I try to make sure that I don't do that to the team. At that point, we didn't have the kind of structure that we are working to build now at Sony/PlayStation. As a team, we're more conscious of how we want to ideally staff our projects, and I want to make sure that my team doesn't have burnout—our dialogue supervisors and leads help to inform me of the risks on a title and together, we figure out the ways to best manage the project. We work on multiple titles simultaneously, and all of them are in different stages of development, so I also do my best to assign projects where no one is running two AAA titles at the height of their production cycles. I want to make sure they're happy and mentally good, so we continue to figure out ways to get the right support that's needed to find a good work/life balance. I also let my team know that they don't have to take on more work to maintain the job. It's about making smart decisions about team management, project management, and time management. Our team is still growing and I understand that I don't have all the answers to make our work life perfect, but I feel that we're starting to build a good foundation to continue to improve it with each project we work on. EM: What future improvements do you foresee in game dialogue? LR: Game audio dialogue is certainly a niche field.
