I choose to fill a large blank exterior wall with a huge, hand-painted communist-style mural. The effect transports the show back to Berlin, 1962. A deco era warehouse served as the Nazi flea market where the eschauer family's looted belongings were being sold off. , so the building was crumbling, but too beautiful not to use. For good measure, the crew shored up the entryway and installed plywood sheets over the 20-foot diameter hole in the middle of the floor. We also painted the entire interior, a huge undertaking, but worth it. Always wanting to lean in to the unexpected and adhering to the rule of saturated colors defining the past, I choose colors that might be construed as counter intuitive for a scene about the Nazi occupation. The ceiling was painted a salmon pink and the walls were blue- green. ffset with the Nazi uniforms, the result created an interesting dichotomy. Budapest is a city built on top of a city, an underground world with miles of tunnels, bunkers and the largest natural geothermal cave system in the world. The labyrinth of over two hundred caves shows signs of being inhabited since prehistoric times. The sewers of Budapest were a refuge for many who hid from the Nazi's during the occupation, and an important location in the story. The production wanted to shoot the real thing. To get down into the sewer system, we had to descend an elaborate endless spiral staircase, close to a mile long. This was not a location for the claustrophobic or faint of heart. The concrete tunnels themselves are uite stunning and eerie. Because they are protected landmarks, the crew couldn't drill or make holes in any of the walls. For the scene where Nadia as her grandmother break through the sewer wall, we needed to build a duplicate section of the sewer tunnel on stage and with VFX support, married the set into the practical tunnel to complete the seuence. The sewer tunnels are punctuated with underground bunkers. The walls are made of steel with an elaborate ribbed spiral design. The production fell in love with the look of these and decided to shoot part of the DMT seuence here. The spiral pattern in the steel amplified the spinning effect, which was achieved with strobe lighting and an elaborate camera rig. The darling of period-correct Budapest locations, eleti Station, marks a significant punctuation to the series' train travel through time. The station survived two world wars and, save some modern updates, looks very much like it did when first A B C
