RICK CARTER SPEAKING AT THE EXHIBIT PREVIEW. B. ESMOA GALLERY WALL. On Saturday, April 30, the El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA) hosted a preview of its latest presentation, Time, a project featuring the work of artist and Production Designer Rick Carter, along with reflections on his work by a group of young LA-based artists. The work is presented as an immersive collage, inspired by the process often used by Carter as he searches for the design language he will employ on a film. Design drawings, memorabilia and portraiture by Carter are juxtaposed with interpretations of his famous designs by contributing artists Alex Garcia, Luke Hayes, Muraji Khalil, Dalila Paola Méndez, Helena Park, Jacori "Aiseborn" Perry, Ivan "Mr Mustart" Petrovsky and Carlos "Kopyeson" Talavera. As Carter noted in his opening remarks at the event, the concept of Time works on several layers in the exhibition. There is an element of a retrospective of Rick Carter's career, seeing his many decades of design work intertwined within the collage. The gallery also offers a contemplation on how these iconic films are interpreted visually. It is natural for filmmakers to take ownership on this level, having been the original creators of the artwork. But this exhibit shows how an audience takes on their own kind of ownership, reinterpreting and refreshing the visual ideas presented in the films through their own lens. Part of the enjoyment of the exhibit stems from the recognition of elements from the iconic films from Carter's career. These include work with Steven Spielberg on Lincoln, War Horse, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, The Post, The BG, uni, e ar o e orlds, A.. Ariial Intelligence and Amistad. His work with Robert Zemekis includes Forrest Gump, The Polar Express, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, Death Becomes Her and Back to the Future, Parts II and III. He has also collaborated with JJ Abrams on Star Wars: The B A
