69 TH A N N UA L M PS E GO L D E N R E E L AWA R DS I 7 President's Welcome I know what you're thinking: another virtual awards show. The Board of Directors was hoping that we'd be hosting an in-person event this year, but we planned for every contingency. That not only allowed us to bring you this year's Golden Reel Awards in a virtual realm, but to do so in a way that's bigger, better and more fun than last year's amazing event. We have plenty of surprises planned. You will not be disappointed. MPSE thrived in 2021. We hosted more Sound Advice events than ever. They were virtual, informative, fun and well-attended. We're planning many more for 2022. We also partnered with other industry organizations on several crossover events. Recently, we hosted our first in-person event since the start of the pandemic. Members of the Board, including myself, joined other members for a walk around Balboa Park in Southern California. It was a welcome opportunity to see old friends, make new ones and enjoy the fresh air. We plan to do it again soon. It's also been an exceptional year for sound. A lot of great content was produced in 2021 and as a result, we received an abundance of worthy submissions. It made for tough work for our judges. I want to thank each of the highly qualified individuals who served as judges and for the professionalism and discrimination they brought to their role. Each nomination tonight is a statement; each win is icing on the cake. Congratulations to all our nominees. These past two years, our members led the way in developing remote solutions that kept them working through the pandemic. We salute their ingenuity. No doubt, some of these remote workflows are here to stay and will keep MPSE members working at the forefront of the new post-production sound world. MPSE has always stood for creativity and innovation. That's why we remain atop the world of sound. Our members comprise the best and brightest across the globe. I am honored to represent you for the next two years. Tonight, we celebrate the best in sound for games, TV and film. Every year, the Golden Reel Awards attract the industry's top talent, and tonight is no different. We are honored to present our annual Filmmaker Award to Ron Howard and our Career Achievement Award to Anthony "Chic" Ciccolini. Ron Howard is an Academy Award-winning director and producer who is responsible for some of the most memorable films of the past four decades, including the critically acclaimed, Oscar- winning dramas A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13, and the hit comedies Parenthood and Splash. We are thrilled to honor him and gratified that he holds the movie sound experience so close to his heart. Anthony Ciccolini has designed and edited sound for scores of popular films and television shows. He is best known for his longtime association with Ron Howard, having served as supervising sound editor on a dozen films by the director, including A Beautiful Mind. We are honored to bestow this award on Chic and overjoyed at his enthusiasm for being with us tonight. This is also a special year, because nearly all our presenters are past Career Achievement Award recipients. They are legends in the sound community, individuals we look up to and aspire to emulate. We are delighted to have them here to hand out Golden Reel Awards to a new crop of filmmakers. Please enjoy the pre- and post-show parties and good luck to all as we celebrate the best in sound at the 69th Annual Golden Reel Awards. Sincerely, Mark A. Lanza President Motion Picture Sound Editors
