The way I will forever visualize her is sitting at a desk in front of me just off to my left. This was how we always sat. It was our editing room orientation regardless of whatever New York City shoebox we were working in. There are no words powerful enough to describe what she meant to me as a collabo- rator and as a friend. Even as a writer, I can't seem to find the perfect or most respectful way to honor her. She was a constant impos- sibly kind and calming presence in my life and had a deliciously infectious laugh I'll never forget. There were moments where I genuinely cared more about making her laugh than I did about the scene we were working on, and we'd find ourselves com- pletely off course. And yet, at the end of the day, no matter how distracted we got, she always guided us back to find what we were searching for. I believe Jen's talent as an editor came from her deep understanding of human connection and her true love of storytelling. I learned more about my characters through her eyes than I did when imagining them myself. She just spoke a different language, one of passion and humility and love. And if you were one of the fortunate people to know her, then you were a better person because of it. I know I am. And I'll forever cherish our memories and the art we created together. I may never get to sit with Jennifer Lilly in an editing room again, but there will always be that laugh, keeping me company every step of the way. And for that, I'm eternally grateful." ■ AZIZ ANSARI, WRITER/ PERFORMER: "Working with an editor is such an inti- mate gig. You need someone who can do the work well, but you also need a partner who can make it fun and rewarding to be trapped in a small dark space for hours on end while you engage in the tedious, sometimes frus- trating process of editing. "I was lucky to have the best partner when I worked with Jennifer Lilly. "Even during the remote work days of Evercast, Jen was a delight to work with at every stage. From her initial passes that always surprised and delighted to the late hours when we weren't sure what to do with our cut. She was always game to try new ideas and push harder until we made some- thing we were excited about. We would laugh and push each other and no matter how many times we rewatched a cut for the millionth time, I always had fun. " Yo u r e a l i z e t h a t w h e n y o u w o r k with people you actually enjoy spending time with, you're very blessed. When you w o r k w i t h p e o p l e y o u a c t u a l l y e n j o y spending time with and they are absolutely phenomenal at their jobs, then you really need to be grateful. "We did it the best you could hope for, we became friends, we enjoyed working together, and we made work that we were proud of. "I will miss her very dearly." ■ BO BURNHAM, WRITER/ PERFORMER: "One of the most enjoyable times of my life was the 16 weeks I spent locked in a tiny, windowless room with Jen Lilly. What made Jen such an extraordinary person also made her such an extraordinary editor — her patience, her humor, her intelligence, her emotional attentiveness, her heart. She was so fun and easy to be around. She made working better and she made the work better. So often in our industry you have to weigh personalities vs. skillsets, how much you can stand a person vs how much they might bring to the table creatively—but Jen was the total package: as a person, as a pro- fessional, as a friend. I am deeply thankful for the time I had with her." ■
