M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 11 CO R N E R TECH BY KOREY PEREIRA MPSE While Krotos has become a household name in the sound design world, it had a humble start. To learn more about how it all began, we caught up with Krotos' CEO and Founder, Orfeas Boteas. An Athens native, Orfeas grew up with a love for music and technology and started his educational career studying music technology and acoustics in Crete. After graduation, he returned to Athens where he worked in post production for a few years. He did a bit of everything from dialogue editing, to music composition to sound design. He quickly found that he enjoyed sound design the most. There was not a huge post scene in Athens, so in 2011, Orfeas decided to move to Edinburgh, Scotland, to pursue a master's program at the University of Edinburgh. One of the fi lms he worked on as a student involved creating monster and creature sounds. This process proved to be time-consuming and diffi cult. For his fi nal project in school, he set out to create software to streamline this process. Without a background in coding, Orfeas used Max MSP, a visual programming platform developed by the company Cycling '74, to create what would be the original version of Dehumaniser. The software took three to four months to create. Once completed, Orfeas made his software available for free on his website, which Krotos is a company based in Edinburgh, Scotland, with the singular goal of transforming the way people design and perform sounds. Their lineup of software and sound libraries have been used for an ever-growing list of fi lms, television shows and video games with users in 65-plus countries. Credits include major Hollywood and AAA game titles such as Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, The Lion King, Avengers, Captain Marvel, Star Trek, Cyberpunk 2077 and many more.
