empty spaces portrayed in Orson Welles' classic Citizen Kane. We marveled at how bold and unsettling the design and photography was and wanted to channel that with Spencer. The concept of having a moat surround the castle sparked a new search for the location team leading to the discovery of Nordkirchen Castle, in Germany's North Rhine Region. The austere palace built in 1720s was a huge, symmetrical estate surrounded by a rectangular moat and majestic grounds. The building itself had long been converted into a university with many additional modern additions, but the main exterior maintained the regions' unusual red brick with limestone door and window frames, making it feel very familiar to Sandringham. The scale was impressive and would make any visitor feel humble and diminutive approaching from the long driveway, the traditional German bricks that made up the drive and turning circle were soon to be covered with 12-tons of traditional English pea stones and the unkept courtyard dressed with topiary and fresh green sod. It was a transformation into the perfect setting for our fragile princess. The interiors of Nordkirchen were limited and needed some restoration to give a soul to the spaces and return them back to their original finery. The rooms provided a few shootable areas and ample rain cover, but a second location was needed to provide so many of the expansive rooms and maze- like corridors described in the story. Schlosshotel Kronberg near Frankfurt was discovered as a location soon after and although the exterior was completely othic, the interiors offered great potential. Built in 1889, Kronberg Hotel's halls and corridors were reminiscent of British stately homes and the company saw the potential to convert these interior spaces into the heart of our Sandringham Estate. However, the show's location conundrum was far from over and we continued to search for further elements needed for our story. Even though we had a ery small budget, we knew we had to find ways to move back-and-forth between England and Germany using seamless transitions. We scouted a kitchen at a state-of-the-art sports stadium in erlin that surprisingly, after some modification and ample dressing, worked well as the vast Royal kitchen seen in the film. small illage hall location was used for our typical "greasy spoon" cafe, A.
