Tasting the Wines from the New Faces notes by Meridith May and Alexander Weil Kay Brothers 2010 "Cuthbert" Cabernet Sauvignon, Amery Vineyard, McLaren Vale ($43) Clean, dense and juicy—this savory red offers up a dot of white pepper in the middle of its cedar creaminess. QUINTESSENTIAL WINES Frankland Estate 2009 Isolation Ridge Shiraz, Frankland River , Western Australia ($39.99) Gamey and rustic, this Shiraz hits pay dirt with an Earth Mother character and a nod to blue fruit. Pretty heather and violet drape the back end. QUINTESSENTIAL WINES Luke Lambert 2010 Syrah, Yarra Valley ($64.99) Wild yeast fermented for an animale core, this wine is bodified! It's got depth and a fleshy, robust (but not overthe-top) strength of soil and sun. The fruit is sourced from an elevated vineyard in St. Andrews where the rocky, depleted soil and steep, windswept slopes produce a more feminine, elegant style of Syrah. EPICUREAN WINES Glaetzer-Dixon 2012 überblanc Riesling, Tasmania ($25) From a cool-climate region and sourced from super-premium vineyards. We found lime zest running hand-in-hand with a sparkling acidity and a fine mineral structure. Incredibly lean with a juicy, but slightly salty, finish. EPICUREAN WINES Glaetzer-Dixon 2011 Avancé Pinot Noir , Tasmania ($35) An array of red berries generously wash across toast and smoke. Minerals guard the edge while underlying tannins are there in spirit: silky and smooth. Perfect terroir for Pinot in Tasmania's long, cool growing season. EPICUREAN WINES Langmeil 2011 "Hangin' Snakes" Shiraz Viognier , Barossa Valley ($14) The theme of this value-driven red is "high acidity. A rich, " but slightly animale aroma leads to black fruit. This is a food-begger. NEGOCIANTS INTERNATIONAL Fowles Wines 2009 Stone Dwellers Cabernet Sauvignon Again, nicely developed aromatics. Palate is hightoned plum fruit with a core of coffee grounds, olives, and eucalyptus. Cool-climate Cabernet. FOWLES WINES USA Fowles Wines 2011 Are You Game? Sauvignon Blanc, Victoria Estate grown fruit. Semillon in the blend gives wine a more viscous texture and full mouthfeel. Great balance. Acidity balances with lemon fruit and rocky minerals. Excellent wine. FOWLES WINES USA Fowles Wines 2009 Are You Game? Shiraz, Victoria Fruit purchased from within Victoria. Dusty and dry apricot fruit nose and palate reminiscent of a young Côte-Rôtie. FOWLES WINES USA Fowles Wines 2010 Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Riesling, Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria blended with Gewürztraminer and Savagnin (from the Jura). Huge stone fruit/quince jelly/slate rock aromas. Palate is viscous and rich, but Savagnin gives life to the wine and balances it. Huge success.  FOWLES WINES USA july 2013  /  the tasting panel  /  61 2013 the tasting panel  / TP0713_034-65.indd 61 6/24/13 5:41 PM
