MEET THE NEW FACES OF AUSTRALIAN WINE G et ready to recalibrate: Whatever notions you've harboured about Australian wine, its time to turn the page and embrace the "Next Chapter" in a story that spans farther back in time than most Americans realize. Evolutions in the Australian wine market can literally be seen on shelves and wine lists as more elegantly labelled, refined, smaller production Aussie wines are beginning to replace bulk brands that have so distinctly defined the country's exports for the last decade. Those in the know have been aware that underneath the bulk market, Australians have long consumed brilliant small-production Shiraz, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir right in their own backyards. That notion will become international news come September, when Wine Australia will present Savour Australia 2013, a comprehensive forum that will challenge perceptions of Australian wine and highlight new initiatives that will bring $140 billion in economic gains to the U.S., Canada, the UK and China. Savour Australia will provide a platform for industry moguls to get to know the new faces of Australian wine. We spoke with five of these dynamic winemakers, who collectively have a clear message to deliver, summed up nicely by Luke Lambert of Luke Lambert Wines: "I think the story of Australian wine over the next 20 years won't be a large company one. It will be a small winery story. That is, the story of the small producers, the single vineyard wines, the winemaker who makes a few barrels of something interesting because he/she believes in it." WIN A TRIP TO SAVOUR! THE TASTING PANEL wants to send YOU, the wine buying professional, to Adelaide Australia for Savour Australia! Once you're Down Under, you'll have the opportunity to taste the wines and meet the winemakers that are shaping the future of the Aussie industry! Send us a letter to the editor explaining why you want to go to Adelaide and how the trip will benefit your career, and we'll send TWO lucky winners on an all-expenses paid trip to Savour! The deadline to enter is July 19, so get writing! Email your letter to SendMeDownUnder@tastingpanelmag.com to enter. july 2013  /  the tasting panel  /  57 TP0713_034-65.indd 57 6/24/13 5:41 PM
