W hat comes to mind when you hear the words Labor Day? For most of us, it conjures memories of summer, barbecues, trips to the beach and for some the dreaded return of homework, tests and lectures. For others, Labor Day even signifies the start of the NFL season (although usually the first games take place the first Thursday post Labor Day). No matter how you celebrate it, you don't want to waste the last three-day weekend of summer! So, in order to insure you make the most of this glorious day of slacking and slouching, we suggest the following activities, each which guarantees a memorable 2010 Labor Day weekend. LABOR DAY CHECKLIST With Labor Day around the corner, Live offers a few examples on how to make the most of your weekend. By: Daniel Albert TAKE A ROAD TRIP Southern California is one of the incomparable locations in the world, unmatched for its variety of available activities. Use your three-day weekend to take that road trip you've always wanted. Whether it is a relatively short drive down to San Diego, a bit longer drive out to Las Vegas, or the six-hour jaunt up to San Francisco, Labor Day weekend is a perfect opportunity to use that extra day for travel, leaving you with two untouched days of pure bliss. If you feel like experiencing an even more memorable adventure, The Grand Canyon, also about six hours away from the city, is an amazing place to visit for some Labor Day camping. If your summer was sub-par, this is the best remedy to salvage it with one last trip! SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP Labor Day traditionally marks the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. Whether starting the week before or just after Labor Day, many use this weekend to make all of those last minute buys needed for that next year of studies. Most stores use Labor Day as an incentive for sales, so Labor Day also is a great day to get some sweet deals on everything from clothes and school supplies, to office gear and barbecue items. The weather may (sadly) even begin to get cold, so start stocking up on warm clothing. Even if you aren't going back to school, take advantage of the great variety of back-to-school deals and re-stock your office or splurge and get that new grill you wanted all summer long and be prepared for next summer's barbecues. GRILL 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM What better day than Labor Day to round up all your friends and get them together for one last hurrah? Break out the dogs, fire up the charcoal for all those burgers and crack open a couple cold ones and Labor Day will go down in history as the day you hosted the best barbecue in town. Go bold and try a new recipe (I suggest the lemongrass chicken wings from the Barbecue Bible), or use traditional recipes that are sure delicious winners. Barbecues are all about atmosphere, so consider a new location whether it is the beach for a bonfire, a nice quite barbeque at the park, or grilling poolside. And at the end of the day, what could possibly be better than lounging in the sun, spending time with friends, and stuffing your face with good eats? GEAR UP FOR THE GRIDIRON You've waited all year (since the Superbowl) and now it's here. You rejoiced with your team's new draft picks, followed their progression through training camp, and grew in confidence as they performed during preseason. Or maybe you had some rough times (Raider fans?) and you're ready to start anew with the beginning of the season. Use Labor Day weekend to iron out all the kinks in your fantasy picks, stock up on beer and munchies for game one, and take advantage of the Labor Day sale to buy that giant TV you've been wanting. Most of all bring your game face! 20 LIVEMAGS.NET AUGUST>>10
