San uan started her re
search early in order to
digest such an enormous
world.
In the Conde Nast Archives
and ogue, she found images from
the period. Women's Wear Daily had
reviews of alston's early collec
tions. e began his career as a milli
ner and rose to fame after designing
ackie ennedy's iconic pink pillbox
hat for ennedy's inauguration. Tif
fany's was enormously helpful in her
research on lsa Peretti.
She was able to work with fabrics
that alston was famous for using
everything from luxurious dou
blefaced cashmeres and wools
to ltrasuede. She reached out to
Toray International, the original cre
ators of ltrasuede and they helped
her recreate his original colorways.
Some of alston's most idolized
outfi ts were reconstructed exactly.
Naeem han, now a famous design
er in his own right designing clothes
for Michelle bama, began his ca
reer as alston's apprentice. e
partnered with San uan to recreate
the beaded jumpsuits and kimonos
for iza Minnelli rysta odriguez.
She also interviewed several people
who were pivotal in alston's life.
