www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY/JUNE 2021 EDITOR'S NOTE remember spending Sunday afternoons watching Godzilla movies with my brothers on our fam- ily's 13-inch TV. The fact that the English dialogue dub was less than perfect, or that the main character was actually a person in a rubber suit didn't matter. In the eyes of an eight-year-old, this was incredible! The idea of a giant creature that could level a city with just a few footsteps, along with a signature roar that could be heard for miles, captivated my imagination. And as much damage as he dished out, I always rooted for Godzilla (and Kong, of course) as he took on foes such as Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan. Decades later, audiences have a much more sophisticated experience, with photoreal visu- al effects, dynamic multi-channel soundtracks and home viewing experiences that are on-par with those of the cinema. Warner Bros. Pictures & Legendary Pictures' Godzilla vs. King Kong was one of the first feature films to see theatrical release as COVID lock-down restrictions eased, and this month, we look at the visual effects studios that created the 500-foot-tall versions of these legendary creatures. Together with my colleague Karen Moltenbrey, we detail the work of Scanline VFX, MPC Film and Weta Digital, among others, who all came together to create this VFX-driven feature film, which saw simultaneous streaming release on the HBO Max platform. Turn to page 16 to learn all about the lead creatures and how the stu- dios also created Mechagodzilla, as well as the city of Hong Kong. No more actors in rubber suits, I can confirm. Also in this issue, Iain Blair talks with director Barry Jenkins, who adapted Colson Whitehead's slavery epic The Underground Railroad for Amazon Prime Video. In addition to directing, Jenkins also served as showrunner, co-writer and EP on the ten-episode series, which chronicles a slave's desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. On page 24, we report on some of the latest "Workstations" that are designed for post workflows, be it editing, graphics or animation. Check out the latest news from Apple, Boxx, Dell, HP and other manufacturers that are addressing remote-workflow needs with powerful systems that take advantage of the latest CPU and GPU combinations. Online, at our website postmagazine.com, I want to bring attention to a few podcasts that we've recently recorded, including a one-on-one with Avid CEO Jeff Rosica, who shares insight into how the company adapted during the pandemic and what the year ahead might look like, including whether or not October's NAB show is in their plans. Earlier this month, we also hosted a podcast that looks at Dolby Atmos workflows and fea- tures veteran mixers Tom McCarthy from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Grammy-winner Tom Ozanich. Who better to discuss the challenges and benefits of the rapidly–emerging format? I'm sure you'll find their collective insight interesting and informative There's a lot more online too, including details from Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, who just won the Oscar for "Film Editing" for his work on Sound of Metal. You'll want to check out the Academy Award-winner's comments. Lastly, I want to briefly pay tribute to Post magazine founder Vincent (Vinny) Testa, who passed away on April 19th. It was Vinny's vision in the mid-'80s that recognized the post production business and its need for a publication that would report on the latest technolo- gies, as well as the artisans who create commercials, films and television shows. More than 35 years later, Post continues to succeed by following that core principle, and I owe him thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the team in its early days, and so many years later.
