LMGI COMPASS
|
Spring 2021
There are still many challenges ahead. We must continue our fight for recognition
of our craft and the creative and critical role we play in the collaborative process of
film, TV and commercial production. This is the basic premise on which the Guild
was founded. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has cracked open
its doors and has welcomed some of us into its ranks. We are still actively pursuing
membership in the Television Academy and the issue of credit placemen is still before
us. Our diligence will, and does pay off. We successfully petitioned the IMDb for our
own credit category, rescuing the Location Dept. from the obscurity of Misc Crew, a
significant accomplishment!
While I'll still be involved in a few pet LMGI projects like education and Fam Tours, I am
enthusiastically passing the baton to our younger members. New blood will continue
to invigorate and carry the Guild through the third decade of the 21st century. I urge
you all to step up, join a committee, take the reins and build upon the foundation laid
18 years ago. Board elections are coming up—I hope you run for a seat and win the
opportunity to serve on the Board. It's a great way to meet and network with your
colleagues, while charting the course of the Guild's future.
In closing, I want to thank everyone who has worked hard to make the Guild what it
is now. There are too many to mention, and I do not want to leave anyone out—but I
have to single out two people who have been very important to me. Our administrative
manager, Erika Howard, is the glue that holds the Guild together. Over the past
few years, through multiple Boards, she has kept us going. She reminds us of our
commitments while somehow maintaining a calm demeanor. Erika, I can't thank you
enough!
And then there's my wife Judy, who has endured hundreds of hours of LMGI calls,
meetings, conferences, crises, discussions, arguments, emails, texts, overseas phone
calls and over the last year, dozens of Zoom calls, while trying to enjoy holidays,
birthdays, weddings, vacations, breakfasts, lunches, dinners or just an hour of quiet.
Her patience with me is immeasurable. Hopefully, I'll be able to give some of those
hours back to her now.
I'm humbled to have served as your president for the past three years. Thank you all
for your support. It's been a lot of work and a lot of fun!
Stay safe, wash your hands and wear a mask!
