The Penthouse Randall Flagg himself would reside in a lavish penthouse at the very apex of the building, feeding on the energy and relishing the adulation of all those below him. Flagg was at the tip of the shard of glass tearing through old Vegas and he would live in luxury, but luxury meant nothing to him. A space was needed that allowed for bloody death, gruesome birth and explosive anger. It needed A. LLOYD'S SUITE. SET PHOTO. B. FLAGG'S PENTHOUSE HALLWAY. SET PHOTO. C. THE GULLY CONCEPT ART BY EMMANUEL SHIU. D. THE GULLY. SET BUILT AT VANCOUVER FILM STUDIOS. to contain fire and have windows that would shatter. The crew built a set that would allow continuous action from the elevator to the penthouse glass with every surface considered. Once again Lindsay Ledohowski's skills brought the set together in 3D, and just as in the casino below, Renee Read's team created custom-built furniture to bring subtle luxury to the room. The Gully Tackling Stu's gully was going to be tough, a massive chasm in the earth where one of the heroes would fall and be left behind. There was a time when I actually thought the best way to create this tear in the earth might actually be to go to a quarry and create it practically in real rock. The production had scouted a few quarries and when I told the foreman at one that I wanted a hole thirty feet deep, sixty feet wide and two hundred feet long, he said, "no problem, we could have that dug for you in a week." Of course, at that point it was mid- summer and the weather was glorious. Very soon thereafter, I came to realize the naivety of my idea. It rains in BC, a lot. And there are rules, very strict rules when you dig holes in the ground, as I found out later when we dug a much smaller "body pit." What was really needed was a very big stage! Unfortunately, the stages would all be filled with other scenery when it was time to shoot Stu's gully. I was just about out of options when UPM Lynne Bespug told me she might be able to get us a stage if we could commit to dates immediately. I asked her to pull the trigger, I didn't see any other way to get it done. A C D B
