The COVID-19 pandemic forced the post production industry to rethink traditional workflows and — quickly — come up with solutions that would allow the process to continue during lockdowns. Thanks to lots of inge- nuity and a can-do attitude, many were able to continue their work — editing, color grading, creating VFX and sound design — from home or other remote locations. Optimists would suggest that 2021 should be a much better year, right? A vaccine is on the way, and remote workflows now have a history of success. But another surge in infection numbers has brought on more lockdowns, and major studios, such as Warner Bros., are mak- ing plans for a year ahead in which theaters may still be closed. At Post, we've had to adapt to the issues going on in the world around us too. Our spring and summer coverage typically have a "blockbuster" theme, looking at the post production work on all the latest theatrical releases. Instead, we spent much of the year covering many of the popular streaming series that viewers enjoy on platforms such as Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix and HBO Max. The latter brings us to this month's cover story, where I speak with edi- tor Ben Lester, ACE, about his work on the six-part drama/suspense series The Undoing, star- ring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. On page 12, Lester talks about the series and how the lockdown actually afforded the team some extra time to fine tune the six-hours of material. Iain Blair connected with showrunner/EP Matt Negrete, who provides insight into the AMC series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which extends the zombie universe as the third title in the franchise (See page 10). Iain also talked with four notable feature film directors about trends they see in the world of filmmaking and what their thoughts are in regard to audi- ences ultimately returning to theaters. Turn to page 14 for his conversations with Alexander Payne, Steve McQueen, Jon Avnet and Lee Isaac Chung, each of whom looks at the film business's "Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats". Our "Outlook" theme continues on page 18, where professionals from throughout the post production industry weigh in on their respective segments. Pros from Nugen Audio, DPA Microphones, Gibson Brands, Zoo Digital and Stephen Arnold Music talk about trends in au- dio post, home studios, remote workflows and sonic branding. Reps from MTI Film, Goldcrest Post and Epic Games discuss remote editorial and multi-user workflows. And talent from Autodesk and Rising Sun Pictures look at trends in visual effects.
