ITWASAFRIDAYMIDNIGHT when I received a call to fi n- ish the last half of Season 1 Euphoria. Immediately, I went online to try and do some research. I only found one small clip: "The New HBO Show Euphoria, Starring Zendaya, Produced by Sam Levinson, A24, HBO, Drake and Future." Although it provided some context, it was still hardly enough information to get a real idea of what was in store for me. As I stepped into the hair and make-up trailer, I instantly knew I was entering into something remarkably special. Donni Davy, Department Head Make-up, and Kirsten Coleman, Assistant Department Head Make-up, welcomed me with open arms. As I looked around, I studied not only their mood board but also their artistry, communication and collaboration with Sam and all the actors. It was evident that collaboration played a key role on how everything in the show substantially functioned. I chose Kaity Licina and Jason Green to be a part of my team for reasons that both have the talent, knowledge and vision to help me with my creative process. The three of us were a seamless supportive team. "ANDSALTTHEEARYOU"EPISODE I emotionally connected with this episode and realized that self-expression was my main focus. Each character had their own personal development and progression. Therefore, I knew I needed to take their hair styles to another level and advance each look to refl ect how their personas had evolved over the show. To do so, I used bold black color streaks on Jules, gems and lots of shinny hair accessories on Maddy. For Cassie, I chose to keep her in a simple natural style for the Winter formal to refl ect her more raw state. Then for her ice skating fantasy, and in stark contrast with the Winter formal look, I used feathers in a nice clean braided up do, along with applying gems that played on the make-up and costume. The amount of love, passion and creativity that went into this episode, along with the insane talent from the cast & crew, it's truly an honor to be a part of a platform to push self- expression in mainstream. The overwhelming response from my fellow brothers & sisters in Local 706 and all the fans from the show that now are using gems and glitter in their hair makes my heart melt. If I can impact anything here, please keep it up, and only BE YOU. BY MELANIE SMITH | DEPARTMENTHEADHAIRSTYLIST HAIR: EPISODES 7 & 8 Studio for all her natural twist and braiding needs. I used custom drawstring curly hair ponytails and two lace wigs for Storm to help protect her hair. The men's styling required barbering and continuity haircuts. Some of our episodes totaled 20 or more days so the usual method of one haircut per episode had to be tweaked. We used various texturizing haircutting techniques on most of our boys. This way we were able to maintain the looks without it feeling fresh off the trailer. Algee Smith (McKay) wore a high fade with Kriss-Kross' braided styles. We used an array of Bumble and Bumble gels, pomades, clays and texture creams to achieve the looks on Jacob Elordi (Nate) and Eric Dane (Cal). I wanted the guys to have a casual natural feel as if they put a little effort into doing their hair and not overdone. Doing a creative show of this size taught me so much and it wouldn't have been possible without the support of my fellow Local 706 hair stylists. Daniel Curet and LeeAnn Brittenham were on hand full time to help us. We also had the likes of Maxine Morris, Monte Haught, Pavi Olivarez, Myo Lai, Lauren Ernsdorf, Nani Casillas, and Monique Hyman to help with the rapidly changing demand of our shooting schedule, hair looks and double-up episodes. You are all appreciated! •
