42 • THEARTISAN SUMMER 2020 to as the "big chop." Kaity did a great job playing off the punk- rock-goth-glam lines. You can really see this hair transformation begin during Kat's storyline in episode 103 and involve from there. Barbie's hair is quite fi ne and silky textured, so we prepped it with thickening mousses from Bumble and Bumble, which is a favorite, and TIGI's Queen for a Day. Tape-in hair extensions from The Hair Shoppe were applied to support some of her looks and had a custom hairpiece built so she could also have a "fringe" option as the season progressed. Kaity alternated taking care of other series' regular and guest cast members. With Hunter Schafer, a trans fashion and runway model actress, I had been given a palette different from the other char- acters. Creating the Jules character took me back to my days as a salon-trained and editorial fashion hair stylist. I knew that she would have a very specifi c look. After doing tests, Donni and I fi gured out that less was more! If the hair and make-up were overdone, she looked hard. We softened the look but still kept the detail. It needed to be neutral and androgynous with sleeker and more polished hair styling. I would describe her styling as part anime meets Club Kid. I came up with the concept to treat her hair like an old school mood ring. As she deals with her moods transitioning, her hair color would refl ect them. I used Viral Pastel Color Depositing shampoos and conditioners mixed with Overtone Color conditioners once a week as needed. When they faded, I boosted the tones with Joico's Instant Color sprays. Hunter would go to the salon for bleaching and root touch-ups formulated with high lift tones by Joico. In order to avoid conti- nuity issues and heat styling damage, I also had two custom lace wigs built by Coluccio Hair Designs. These became crucial on days where she was cross-block shooting episodes where the hair color needed to change. Besides her blown-out sleek looks, we created texture in her hair avoiding heat, by two-strand twisting or bun wrapping and braiding with olive oil mousse on dry hair and letting it set during her time in the make-up chair. I also used Ouai styling products and Joico K-Paks for at-home care. We all took a shot at the glam looks on Alexa Demie (Maddy) and Sydney Sweeney (Cassie) using several sets of extensions and hairpieces for length and volume. Glitter glues, color paste and rhinestones, along with '90s-style velvet scrunchies for some of the cheerleading sequences. Sam Levinson sent me a lot of inspi- ration from infl uencers he followed on Instagram, and we'd create variations on a theme from there. Nika King (Leslie) and Storm Reid (Gia) wanted heat-less natural hair styles. To accommodate the shooting schedule, I would send Nika to Kim Kimble's Hair
