Home of the world's largest telescopes from 1908 to 1948 and a research facility to this day, Mount Wilson is where Edwin Hubble discovered both the existence of other galaxies and the expansion of the universe. Albert Einstein even visited Hubble on Mount Wilson in 1931, reportedly to thank him. As amazing as Hubble's findings were, it is equally amazing to me that human beings were able to assemble all this massive hardware on top of a mountain at the turn of the twentieth century. There's an Astronomical Museum too: kind of an exhibition in itself, with instructive space photography and a topographical model of the observatory grounds. To get to Mount Wilson, take the Angeles Crest Highway fourteen miles northeast out of La Cañada, and then take Red Box Road for another five miles. The observatory is open now through the last weekend of November, weather permitting; you can check conditions and see the live Towercam at the observa- tory's website. Disclaimer: If you don't like switchback mountain roads with scary/beautiful views, you may want to ask someone else to drive...
