17 S P R I N G Q 1 I S S U E G E T T I N G O R G A N I Z E D and fair dealing" has a meaning for folks that's both more immediate and more richly experienced than any words in a dusty document, and it's an imperative more pressing than the mere avoidance of punishment. It's about harnessing a robust collegiality to better exercise power in the workplace. A s I m e n t i o n e d , t h e p r o c e s s f o r charging members with misconduct un- der Article XIV of our constitution hadn't been invoked for decades. That changed l a s t y e a r, t h o u g h , w h e n t h e G u i l d brought a member up on charges for the first time in institutional memory. Per our constitution, charges were filed in September of last year, presented to the membership at our October membership meeting, and tried at a special meeting of the Board of Directors in November. (The member was found guilty and the Board issued a reprimand, fine and suspension, although final determination must be considered by the general membership at our next membership meeting.) The specifics of the case — an employ- er that violated its crew's legal rights, a member ducking multiple attempts by union staff and even our president to contact him, IATSE picket lines repeat- edly crossed — aren't my focus here. The point I'd like to make is that, sadly, our union found it necessary to invoke this rarely used process because of a grave breach of the code that defines our union. It was an unhappy episode, but its exceptional nature helps to illustrate the degree to which our membership overall appreciates and abides by the rules governing union members' profes- sional conduct. One bad actor violating a handful of taboos has thrown into sharp relief just how strong are the values that we all honor. I am pretty confident that we will be able to again shelve Article XIV. Hope- fully it won't see further use for at least several more decades. In extraordinary circumstances, our Guild constitution, like the U.S. Constitution, provides a mechanism for correcting conduct we cannot brook within our union. But much more potent than any such corrective are the common interests and the bonds of collegiality that unite us. Without having to think about it, we know that union membership can only survive within a medium of mutual com- mitment and commonality of purpose shared with our sisters and brothers. Such solidarity is the water in which we swim. ■ POST PRODUCTION SERVICES We proudly congratulate our nominees FORD V FERRARI Oscars nominations: Best Picture; Film Editing; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing BAFTA nominations: Cinematography; Editing; Sound CAS Awards nomination: Sound Mixing Motion Picture – Live Action and STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SK Y WALKER Oscars nominations: Music (Original Score); Sound Editing; Visual Effects BAFTA nominations: Original Score; Sound; Special Visual Effects FOX POST PRODUCTION SERVICES | 10201 W.
