THE ARTISAN FALL 2019 • 87 Chase, Frank Griffi n, Werner Keppler, Darrell McIntyre, Tom Burman with archival footage of Ed Butterworth, John Inzerella, Verne Langdon, Leo Lottito, Jr., Howard Smit, Maurice Stein, Marvin Westmore (and others) plus the huge hair department headed by Margaret Donovan and wigmaker Josephine Turner, the majority of the cast members from Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter all helped to tell the tale of the extraordinary creatures made for Planet of the Apes and the sequels. It is a richly woven documentary that educates and entertains, not only giving the history of the Local 706 members who changed fi lm making, but pulls on the heartstrings to see our brothers and sisters who we appreciate and revere for their contributions. Thousands of hours of footage were researched, shot and edited and it was independently funded. Although much was told about the making of the fi lm, little was told about the artists who actually did the work. This is their story.
