THE ARTISAN FALL 2019 • 19 BY PATRICE K. MADRIGAL Theater Business Representative I.A.T.S.E. Local 706 Theme Park, Theater & Broadcast Television News SHOW NEWS More News! We have our fi rst-ever signed agreement with American Conservatory Theatre (A.C.T.) at the Geary Theater in San Francisco! Negotiations with San Diego Opera, the Old Globe, Broadway San Diego, Broadway San Jose (Regional Theater) and KTTV/KCOP (Network TV) are ongoing. Negotiations with the Dolby Theater and FOX Sports begin soon. All of these contracts are a step in the right direction! Moving forward, there is still so much work to be done but we are off to a great start! Ratified… We have ratifi ed our con- tract with Pasadena Playhouse and we have also ratifi ed the KTLA (Network TV) contract! Also, we have come to an agreement with NBC West LLC (Network TV) and the ballots have been sent out; ballots are due back October 14 for counting. Last but not least: ballots were sent out for our agreement with Disneyland Resort and were counted September 30… I am happy to report contract ratifi ed!! Lately, I have been receiving quite a few questions regarding all the different classifi cations in our union, as well as the different jobs we all do. We, myself included, are part of what is called the "non-roster" classifi cation. Non-roster works primarily within the theater and theme park community, as well as network television. Although the word "non" can sometimes connotate negativity, I do not see it that way. It is simply a term differentiating one classifi cation from another. Both roster and non-roster are an equally important part of our union. "What is the difference?" That is one of the most common questions I am asked. The non-roster contracts allow the employees in theater to do both make-up & hair. Some contracts allow touring with different artists and Broadway shows. Additionally, the work of theme park "Cast Members" (wig stylists & make-up artists) is very similar to what we do in theater. Both being positions requiring extensive training with wigs. Network TV is also a part of our non-roster classifi cation. If you should choose, those days worked count toward Roster qualifi cation. Both classifi cations have different healthcare plans which allow enrollment with a threshold number of hours worked. In my career, I have LOVED my work in the theater and working on the road. It was my choice to remain in the "non-roster" classifi cation as it may be for others. Regardless of the decisions we choose to make in our careers, we are all equal and part of Local 706 and the I.A.T.S.E. If we are doing what we love, that is what's important and is all that truly matters. The love of our craft. Respect for one another in all that we do. "It's time to trust my instincts. Close my eyes and leap." —Wicked Wizarding... Harry Po er and the Cursed Child are offi cially working their magic in the Curran Theater! We signed an excellent contract with high hopes of having a healthy show run. This production is presented in two parts, two acts each: part one as a mat- inee, and then part two as the evening show (on Thursdays and Fridays, they present one part each night). Breaking all records and winning awards in London, New York, Melbourne—and now San Francisco!
