Clarita, CA, for Cliff's drive up and turn into the drive-in entrance. For the Van Nuys Drive-In mural and screen wall with a camera move coming over screen the production went to visual effects supervisor John Dykstra. John had a previs video done from my drawings and the locations being used and we worked out the length of the route and size of lot needed. Then John contracted New Deal Studios to build the drive-in miniature mural/screen wall and parking lot with cars. I worked with Ian Hunter and his team at New Deal for the drive-in, supplying them with the mural design, colors, fence walls and graphics. The miniature set was shot at New Deal's studio in Sylmar, CA. One of the best and of course, the hardest thing about making this film, was the epic scale of the diverse locations, which to me so defines the landscape of Los Angeles. Through Quentin's vision, the film looks at LA through wondrous eyes in 1969. This is really Quentin's eyes as a young boy. Early in the preproduction of the film, Quentin and I were talking about the points of view for this film. He said to me, "imagine an eight-year-old child is laying down in the back of his mom's car looking out the window, that is the view of how he sees Los Angeles…signage, movie marquees, buildings." That of course, defined how I looked at designing Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. ADG Barbara Ling, Production Designer Richard L.
