Many murals were done for this fi lm, but none as large and as diffi cult to paint as the Aquarius Theatre Hair mural. After months of trying to fi nd a close-up of the actual mural, a decent shot was found that could be worked from. Again, Ed Strang and the Trio team were brought in to paint the mural on sight, after fi rst having construction prepare the wall for painting. The mural painting took about two weeks. As much as Quentin wanted Grauman's Chinese Theatre, it sadly had to be given up, as there was too much gone and renovated within it. But we both remembered the Grauman's parking lot that used to be on the corner, with its huge triple-sized billboard promoting the fi lm that was showing. So we decided to build that instead, and have Cliff 's car driving to Rick's house in the Hollywood Hills pass by it. A parking lot with the correct turn in Downtown LA was found, and the lot was recreated with the fi lm that was running at that time in history. The Van Nuys Drive-In required a complicated set confi guration for this complex sequence shot in multiple locations and scales. The back of Paramount Drive-In/Honeybee Transportation in Paramount, CA, was used for Cliff 's trailer location. There was a dilapidated warehouse complex behind the drive-in that stored wrecked cars and had an open view of the drive-in parking lot. Then a full-scale Van Nuys Drive-In marquee was built on location at Saugus Speedway Gate #4 in Santa A. & B. AQUARIUS MURAL. BEFORE AND AFTER. SET PHOTO BY ANDREW COOPER. C. GRAUMAN'S PARKING LOT.
