As reported in the OC Register, between 30 and 40 transient registered sex offenders who had been camping out next to their parole office, were forced to move away. The sex offenders were parking their trucks and RVs in the industrial, business and small residential district on Coronado Street in Anaheim to be close to the officers they have to report to frequently. But when residents and business owners caught wind that these transients were sex offenders, they complained to the police. In fact, the sex offenders were breaking Jessica's Law, whereby registered offenders are not allowed to dwell near schools or parks. The parole officers vacated them from the area. Back in January, Disneyland began the renovation of its Rivers of America attraction by first draining all the water out of the "rivers" that surround Tom Sawyer Island. On May 8, after months of preparation, building and animatronic engineering, or "Imagineering," the attraction reopened to guests with raft and ship tours on the Columbia Sailing Ship to the island and along the rivers. The retro Mark Twain Riverboat later began to take guests on rides in the rivers which now represent four famous American rivers; the Potomac, the Mississippi, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. Disneyland representatives stated that the park used recycled water for this attraction. A female gray whale diverted from her migratory pattern and rested in the calm waters of the Dana Point Harbor for a few days. After Channel 7 KABC spread news of the whale's pit stop anomalism, hundreds of people came to the shore of Doheny Beach to watch her languid swim. When it was discovered she had fishing nets and rope tangled around her tail, damaging her tail and adversely affecting her swimming, marine mammal experts were called in from Sea World. They cut off the rope and she swam back out to sea, towards her migratory path. But the next day she was back, and she died in the harbor on May 14. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill continued to spew over 200,000 gallons of oil daily from a damaged well, a mile under the sea. The well was blasted apart when a (British Petroleum) BP-leased oil rig, the Deepwater Horizon, exploded and killed eleven workers off the coast of Louisiana on April 20. Thousands of gallons of chemicals were poured into the spill to break it apart, and BP constructed a 100-ton box that failed to contain the gushing. BP then set the oil on fire to scoop up the tar residue and began blasting mud and concrete at the leak's source on May 26. Louisiana beaches are closed and commercial fishermen are unable to work. Arizona's State Legislature voted for a new immigration law, SB 1070, which was signed by Governor Brewer and set to be enforced in August. The Arizona law was vehemently opposed by many state senators, President Obama, Latino communities nationwide, including the members of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Mexican government. The governor's office was inundated with Arizona residents calling in to voice their opposition to the new law. The law states that Arizona police officers can detain individuals they suspect are in the U.S. illegally. As well, immigrants, who do not have federal identity papers on them at all times, would be committing a misdemeanor crime The Tennessean Newspaper reported that the massive flooding Tennessee and Mississippi experienced in the first week of May caused 19 deaths. There were over 1,000 emergency rescues of stranded residents whose homes were filled with water when Nashville's Cumberland River rose over its flood line. Firefighters airlifted people from off their roofs, the flooded Interstate 24, from trees and from cars. Evacuated residents had to sleep in shelters set up at high schools and hospitals. Authorities in Nashville said the Cumberland River levee had sprung a leak, and that they had to shut down the water treatment plant for safety.
