With the Snell house on stage coming into shape, Art Director John Richardson and I tried to resolve the paddlewheel casino boat. Making our search for a paddlewheel more challenging was that we were standing in Atlanta, two hundred miles away from any navigable waterway that would allow us to float a boat. We found a reasonably priced working paddlewheel in New Jersey, but the logistics of floating it to Georgia, cutting it apart and then trucking it to Atlanta were too difficult. Do we build one? Let's keep looking. As pragmatically as Marty Byrde navigates season two through his growing problems with the cartel, the Snells and the FBI, John and I got to work breaking down the riddle, and started working out possible solutions. At a certain point in preproduction, someone (and I want to credit this person accurately, it may have been our head accountant!) mentioned that she worked some (many) years earlier as a Scarlett O'Hara dressed tour guide on a paddlewheel boat at Stone Mountain Park, not twenty miles away! We contacted the folks at Stone Mountain, a park owned by the state of Georgia, and amazingly, there was not one, but two paddlewheelers mothballed on the lake. We'd called in the nick of time too, as the boats were slated to be scrapped within the month. We hustled out to view the two boats immediately. The two boats were intact, though not in very good shape. Marine coordinator Dan Malone came along, as he'd be charged with making the boat move. With Dan's approval, it was decided to work with the larger, better boat, the trigger was pulled and an agreement made with Stone Mountain Park. In addition to the boat, their A.
