He will be a freshman majoring in music, having studied at The Crossroads School for the Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, CA. Max began his study of music at age 5. He followed his passion straight through to the present, taking lessons four hours a week and also practicing independently three to five hours a day. His favorite composer is the American post-modernist Frederic Rzewski. Max is drawn to this composer due to different brilliant techniques employed and resounding themes of protest and dissident. Max also admires what an incredible performer Rzewski is! Max has won many local, national and international competitions, including The California Association of Professional Music Teachers, in which he placed first in three different age divisions, The Southwest Youth Music Festival, The Bach Festival (Region 4) and The Pasadena Community Orchestra Young Artists Competition which awarded him first place! Max was active as a student leader for LGBT students. He was dedicated to presenting a loud high school presence and welcoming younger students as much as possible in this regard. In order to stay focused and happy, Max runs or bikes 7-12 hours a week and practices yoga. He "embraces the world with curiosity and vigor." We are confident Max Hammond will be a rising star at Yale. We are pleased and honored to offer him one of the ADG/Richard Stiles Scholarships this year.
