DGA Events Roundup DGA Hosts Indie Directors Outreach at 2018 Outfest Film Festival From July 12 to 22, Outfest, the 36th Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival, presented films and videos from around the world, as well as panel discussions, special events, parties and receptions in venues all around the city. As part of the DGA's outreach efforts for independent filmmakers, the Guild's Los Angeles headquarters served as the central nexus for the festival and the DGA served as both a screening venue and a longtime sponsor of the festival. The Guild also hosted a luncheon on July 16 for filmmakers participating in the festival. During the luncheon, Director-member Andrew Fleming (Insatiable) spoke to the gathering about the advantages of DGA membership. The attendees also received tips about the festival from Outfest Executive Director Christopher Racster, Outfest Director of Programming Lucy Mukerjee and more information about the Guild from DGA Senior Manager of Special Events & Independent Organizing Matt Gamarra. Also attending the luncheon and speaking about their films in the festival were DGA Director-members A.P. Gonzalez (Clay Farmers) and Ondi Timoner (Mapplethorpe). Outfest is the leading organization that promotes equality by creating, sharing and protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender stories on the screen. Over the past three decades, Outfest has showcased thousands of films from around the world to audiences of nearly a million, mentored hundreds of emerging filmmakers and protected more than 20,000 LGBTQ films and videos. During the East Coast session at the Guild's New York offices on July 14, DGA National Vice President Vincent Misiano (Bull) and Director Eric Stoltz (Madam Secretary) provided training for the attending first-time episodic television directors on their role, responsibilities and obligations. During the West Coast session at DGA headquarters in Los Angeles on August 4, Directors Mary Lou Belli (NCIS: New Orleans), Mark Tinker (Chicago P.D.) and Andy Wolk (Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce) were the instructors. The orientation was codified in the 2017 Basic Agreement and the program was launched in July of that year. In each course, the participants also learned about the standards of the craft, their creative rights as directors and the Guild resources available to them. The attendees also received valuable advice and learned the best practices to help them succeed from some of the top directors working today. Photos: 1.
