12 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2018 New Zealand Te Ata Film Forum Invites LMGI Pros LMGI members Dow Griffith, Kent Matsuoka and Lori Balton attended Te Ata (The Dawn), a successful film forum held in a stunning location—the Otamarakau Marae on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. They contributed to break-out sessions exploring best practices for filming, as well as a panel discussion, joined by New Zealand cinematographer Simon Raby, that examined the importance of locations to storytelling. Diversity Day, a staple in the filmmaker community at the Cannes Film Festival, returned May 14, 2018, with a general diversity short film showcase, celebrating the work of film- makers giving life to diverse characters, with stories transcending boundaries. For the third consecutive year, the Women in Formation Show- case gave special distinction to female filmmakers depict- ing honest images of the fem- inine voice. A panel discus- sion focused on #whatsnext in response to #metoo and #timesup, moderated by American actor John Marshall Jones and an awards recep- tion also included in the 2018 program. New in 2018 was the intro- duction of Global Women of Color in Film Day at the Cannes Film Festival; Diver- sity in Cannes' first official appearance at the Marché du Film. Brinkley has been approved by the Festival de Cannes for a screening in the Short Film Corner, which she used to showcase films by women of color, including Chris Beal, India McGee, Leah Patterson, Anna Carvalho, Meleisha Edwards, Gisela Savdie and Pinjung Chen. An extension of Diversity in Cannes. LMGI Welcomes 2018-19 Board of Directors The Location Managers Guild International proudly announces our new Board of Directors. New active members of the Board are past LMGI President Lori Balton (LA), Les Fincher (NY) and John Rakich (Toronto). Congratulations. Reelected to new terms are returning Board members JJ Levine (LA) and Matt Palmer (Vancouver). Returning Board members continuing their two-year term are Jimmy Ayoub (NY), Matt Chamberlin (Atlanta), Mike Fantasia (LA), Mac Gordon (Atlanta), Wes Hagan (Atlanta), Eric Klosterman (LA), Alison Taylor (LA) and Dorion Thomas (LA). The Board confirmed the reelection of two business members: Mario Ramirez of Reel Security (LA/Atlanta/ New Orleans) and Dan Taylor of Inland Empire Film Permits (San Bernardino). Special thanks to all those who expressed their willingness to support the Guild by running for the Board, including Ryan Schaetzle (Atlanta) and Phill Kane (LA). We are grateful as well to those Board members completing their two-year term who are not returning: Kokayi Ampah (LA), Phill Kane (LA) and Melissa DeMonaco (Pomona). We hope they continue to support the Guild. The Board organizational meeting to select new officers for the coming year will take place June 24. Members are encouraged to attend.
