Winter 2018 The Costume Designer 57 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK Designing Amazon's epic action drama Jack Ryan was a study in contrasts for CD Molly Maginnis. After shooting a total of six months in Montreal where the black ice never melted, in Wash- ington, D.C., for an outdoor summer party where the freezing rain never stopped, and in Morocco where it never got below 100 de- grees, Paris was a welcomed respite … although the SWAT team and police looked so real, it was nerve wracking for the neigh- borhood. Inspired by her extensive research on Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Turkey, and Afghanistan, Maginnis designed a rich tapestry of Arabic clothing formed by their culture, society, and art, as well as a realistic depiction of the modern CIA derived from a private tour. Working with hundreds of actors from all over the world and different crews in each country, Maginnis, along with CD Brenda Maben onboard as international supervisor, was respon- sible for over a hundred technicians and costumers in the process. Filming abroad has its challenges. Once, in Morocco, the 1st AD ne- glected to tell her the director requested the lead villain wear all white, while the executive producer insisted he wear all black—it was a classic moment! CD Molly Maginnis with Montréal winter snipers on Jack Ryan After finishing off the sixth and final season of The Mindy Project, CD Salvador Perez has reunited with Mindy Kaling for her new show Champions for NBC, starring Anders Holm, Andy Favreau, J.J. Totah, and Mindy Kaling. Vince (Holm), a charismatic gym owner with no ambition, lives with his younger brother Matthew (Favreau), a gorgeous idiot. When Vince's teenage son is dropped off on their doorstep by Priya (Kaling), a high school fling, their simple life of women and working out is upended. With only 34 days of shooting, wrapping in February, CD Audrey Fisher is busy designing the costumes for the film Destroyer, a mod- ern Los Angeles crime thriller, directed by Girlfight helmer Karyn Kusama. Nicole Kidman stars as Detective Erin Bell, who as a young cop was placed undercover with a cult-like gang in the California desert with tragic results. Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, and Scoot Mc- Nairy play Bell's intriguingly different leading men. Onboard are dual- threat CD Monica Chamberlain assisting and ACD Leslie Sungail supervising, with ILL Robin Richesson illustrating storyboards for the production. Award-winning makeup artist Bill Corso has joined the team to help Kidman's character arc, a 17-year span between her contemporary North East Los Angeles scenes and flashbacks to an early 2000s Hemet, California, drug den. Happily, Destroyer was one of two smaller independent films granted a California Film Commis- sion tax credit, which was huge and amazing news.
