6 The Costume Designer Winter 2018
EDITOR'S NOTE
I first realized Costume Design was an occupation
while watching Greta Garbo in the 1920s film, A Single
Standard. Adrian's costumes succinctly captured a free-
thinking, strong-willed character through her louche,
striped pajamas. The casual, masculine silhouettes with
a nautical flair were antithetical to women of the
time, a radical rethinking of the uniform women were
expected to wear. I was mesmerized.
Costume Design is a stupendous vocation. It
involves digesting a script, which is at its heart a balance of fiction used to tell
truths. It wields tools like psychology, sociology, memory, and intuition, distilled
into a vocabulary of clothing to create real, believable people in situations both
mundane and fantastical. It is a keystone in filmmaking, allowing the audience
to be more fully drawn into the possibility of a story. Without the conviction
that the tale is real, there can be no poignancy, payoff, or resolution. There is the
collaborative element of realizing a vision in concert with others, but there is also
a strong streak of solitude. How all of these intricacies are translated into searing
images, which can sometimes haunt a viewer, is almost magic.
Many of the people responsible for some of the most memorable moments
in film and television have been honored with our Career Achievement Award.
To recognize the twentieth anniversary of our Costume Designers Guild Awards,
we have featured every Career Achievement recipient on our cover. I had the
privilege and pleasure of speaking to every living honoree. In Japan, there is a
tradition of recognizing individuals who are "Preservers of Important Cultural
Properties" as National Treasures. In my opinion, our Career Achievement
winners could easily be lauded with this distinction. I was so moved by their
candor, vitality, and wisdom. Their stories and experiences are as much part of
the fabric of Costume Design as materials, yet many are untold.
It is this transcendent unifying belief in what we do as individuals and as a
collective that has yielded exponential yearly growth in the recognition for our
field. This year, Joanna Johnston's name is added to this illustrious list and we
celebrate her oeuvre and the way she can add gravitas or panache depending
on what the script demands. Her range is vast and includes translating Abraham
Lincoln, Jessica Rabbit, and Forrest Gump into powerful, unforgettable characters.
We also recognize our nominees and the excellence of their work, which has
compelled and inspired us this year. Congratulations.
