16 The Costume Designer Winter 2018 LABOR REPORT UNION LABEL New Year 2018 Organizing the Organized to Organize the Un-Organized IATSE believes standing together is thriving together. #IASOLIDARITY set visits by the representatives of the Hollywood locals are being well received by our members. "Wow, all of you are here together," said a Local 44 member about a Costume Designer, production designer, grip, and script supervisor local representative visiting a soundstage. IATSE local representatives together are visiting set locations around Los Angeles to get feedback from our locals' members about what concerns them as contract negotiations prepare to begin in the spring of 2018. Are you concerned about protecting our standard of living, or maybe our health and retirement benefits, or is it safety at work? Build a stronger, unified IATSE; support each other in the upcoming negotiations. Go to #IASOLIDARITY, and post your photos and concerns. The CDG Young Workers Committee co-chaired a Red Cross "Save-a-Life Sunday" blood drive on January 7, 2018, saving over 130 lives. Congratulations to Co-chairs Lydia Graboski-Bauer and Kit Peterson on their good work. The MLK Breakfast celebrated 50 years on January 20, 2018. Remembering Martin Luther King Jr. each year has grown into an institutional must-attend event. Sen. Kamala Harris was the guest speaker at the Convention Center downtown in Los Angeles. The Labor Day Solidarity Parade marched in Wilmington, Los Angeles, starting at intersection of Broad Ave. and E St., to Avalon Blvd. and M St., concluding at Banning Park for barbecue at noon. The music festival in Grand Park downtown LA took place in the evening. The second annual Women's March took place on January 20, 2018, starting at Pershing Square and ending in Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles. The Women's March Foundation says, "We recognize that there is no true peace, freedom, or inclusion without equality for all." In my opinion, the "You Are Awesome Award" has to be awarded to the CDG membership. Take a moment, take a breath, take a bow. You make the screen magic live. Dressing the storyline of life on the screen touches the viewer in a personal way. We seem to be living in a reality show these days and who better to reflect that reality than us? Entertainment is the second largest industry in the United States, second only to the U.S. military. Congratulations CDG members—you are awesome! In solidarity, Betty Madden bmadden@cdgia.com
