Union, Strength, Future AMY TIERNEY SAG-AFTRA Delegates and Officers Gather in October for Third Biennial Convention Under the theme "Our Union, Our Strength, Our Future," President Gabrielle Carteris convened the convention on Oct. 6 in honor of the late Ken Howard. She then paid respects to the victims of the recent hurricanes and the mass shooting in Las Vegas. "Our convention is a powerful symbol of hope and a source of inspiration for our members as it brings together and unifies hundreds of diverse professionals," she said. "We have the power to effect change in our industry and the world around us, and we are doing it together." More than 400 delegates from across the nation gathered at the Sheraton Universal in Universal City, California, Oct. 6–8. In the main ballroom, delegates took up an amendment and key resolutions, heard speeches and elected the national vice presidents. Those elected included Executive Vice President Rebecca Damon; Vice President, Los Angeles Clyde Kusatsu; Vice President, New York Liz Zazzi; Vice President, Mid-Sized Locals Ilyssa Fradin; Vice President, Small Locals Suzanne Burkhead; Vice President, Actors/Performers Samantha Mathis; Vice President, Broadcasters Catherine Brown; and Vice President, Recording Artists/Singers Dan Navarro. Damon praised her fellow elected leaders for their tenacity. "They all embody what it takes to be a leader of this union. You have to have a certain kind of fortitude and a certain tenacity to keep going and keep fighting for the good of all members," she said. F or just the third time in SAG-AFTRA's history, leaders from all over the country came together at a national convention to chart the union's course, elect top officers and inspire a new generation of leadership.
