Summer 2017 The Costume Designer 23 Outstanding Costumes for a Contemporary Series, Limited Series or Movie Photos: Grace and Frankie, Netflix; Big Little Lies, HBO; Empire, Fox; Transparent, Amazon; This Is Us, NBC This Is Us Moonshadow Hala Bahmet Costume Supervisor: Elinor Bardach Assistant Designer: Marina Ray Using my iPhone, iPad, and laptop computer to access the cloud and a wide range of apps has completely changed the way I research, shop, and communicate images, and informa- tion within the costume department, and also with our direc- tors and producers. Being able to communicate remotely and quickly is still the biggest game-changer for me. Regarding costume illustration, sometimes I prefer a hand-drawn sketch to help convey a passionate emotional mood or historic pe- riod, while other times I prefer a high-tech rendering—it just depends on the project. My go-to hand-drawn artist is Jacque- line Wazir and my CAD illustrator is Gloria Shih, these incred- ibly talented fellow CDG members help bring my designs and costumes to life. Transparent To Sardines and Back Marie Schley Costume Supervisor: Leslie Herman Assistant Designer: Hannah Schneider The design process for Transparent re- mains pretty low-fi and we continue to make costumes in traditional ways. Howev- er, prep time has become the greatest chal- lenge for us. The script changes often, at the last minute, and sometimes radically. We cross board 10 episodes (often with two units shooting simultaneously). Therefore, technologies that organize and speed up the process have transformed how quickly we can adjust and produce. First, on the iPhone, I organize, share, take all my fitting photos, and airdrop them to my computer. Then there is Instagram, where I find inspi- ration and source vendors. For our made-to- order costumes, we use Adobe Illustrator for patternmaking and to print the patterns on large-format printers. Printing patterns saves time and helps to estimate fabric quantity. Also, websites with overnight ship- ping that allow more than 30 days to return have been a game changer and will eventu- ally take over everything!
