The author, Philipp Meyer, lives in Austin (where he was a James Michener Fellow at the University of Texas), the Art Department is from Austin, and the film was shot in and around Austin in its infamous summer heat under the blazing Texas sun. Philipp lobbied hard for the Texas location and Austin-centric crew, and I'm proud of AMC for agreeing. So many Texas stories are shot out of state—Saskatchewan or some other place that's supposed to be Texas—and when shows are actually made here, much of the Art Department is often brought in from somewhere else. Above: A frame capture from the program shows the main street of the town of McCullough Springs with background talent and visual effects. Far left: A set still of the street as dressing nears completion. The location is a street of buildings that Adam Woolley has collected over the years and turned into a wedding venue. The buildings were all freshly painted and pristine, with roses and other wedding-like landscaping, so the Art Department had a lot of character work to do.
