Once these two centerpiece sets had been designed, attention shifted to executing their construction and creating functional kitchens in both sets. "The parabolic Golden Arches reference a space age vocabulary...their tense spring lines give the same dynamism as the Theme Building at LAX, while the windows are canted upward and outward like those of an airport control tower. All of this served to capture the spirit of post-war America, and the moment of optimism and opportunity that was really Kroc's religion. As director John Lee Hancock stated it, 'America had come through World War II, and we felt like we deserved everything, and we wanted it now.'" This page, top to bottom: An archival photograph showing a Golden Arches franchise under construction. The cast concrete parabolas were used to support the tilted, wedge-shaped roof. Construction coordinator Sean Clouser prefabricated all of the building components in the mill for assembly on site. The arches are formed from steel tube, with the voids used to house the transformers and dimmers for the neon in the upper arches and fascias. With the upper arches in place, the neon and glass vendors began adding their prefabricated components, while the parking lot was being resurfaced.
