26 SAG-AFTRA | Fall 2016 | SAGAFTRA.org Broadcast News SAG-AFTRA HITS THE ROAD FOR JOURNALIST CONVENTIONS ACROSS THE NATION National Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists Convention and Career Fair Washington, D.C. / Aug. 3–7 The two largest diversity- in-journalism organizations joined forces this year in our nation's capital. SAG-AFTRA Chief Broadcast Officer Mary Cavallaro joined the panel The Art of the Deal: Negotiating Your Future, which gave attendees the opportunity to hear from industry experts, including agents and producers, on how to best navigate their careers. It was moderated by SAG-AFTRA member Jennifer Donelan. SAG-AFTRA also had a booth at the career fair, where Washington-Mid Atlantic Local staffers met with convention attendees alongside staff from the EEO & Diversity and News & Broadcast departments. The SAG-AFTRA booth was a favorite destination of hundreds of attendees. Asian American Journalists Association National Convention Las Vegas, Nevada / Aug. 10–13 Election season was on the minds of those at AAJA this year, with representatives from both the RNC and DNC as featured speakers at this gathering of Asian- American media professionals. SAG-AFTRA sponsored its second such reception to familiarize young members and students with the union and give them the opportunity to network with established SAG-AFTRA members. In the run-up to the convention, SAG-AFTRA staffers participated in an online Google Hangout session to provide general information about the union and advice on how to get the most out of the convention. Additionally, it served to promote the private SAG-AFTRA office hours at the convention, where attendees could meet one- on-one with staff members. National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association National Convention and Media Summit Miami, Florida / Sept. 8–11 SAG-AFTRA was a proud sponsor of this year's NLGJA convention and hosted a workshop titled Ask the Recruiters and the Career Specialists. It featured introductory remarks by SAG-AFTRA Seattle Local Executive Director Shellea Allen, and featured NPR reporter and SAG-AFTRA member Neda Ulaby alongside other industry leaders discussing best practices for pursuing careers in media and journalism. The NLGJA is an organization of journalists, media professionals, educators and students working from within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues. Excellence in Journalism Conference New Orleans, Louisiana / Sept. 18–20 The Society of Professional Journalists and the Radio Television and Digital News Association partnered this year with the Native American Journalists Association to produce the Excellence in Journalism conference. SAG-AFTRA, a longtime sponsor, had a popular booth in the exhibition hall, where staff from the News & Broadcast and EEO & Diversity departments interacted with members and future members, providing information about the important role the union plays in careers of member broadcasters. The goal of the association is to improve communications among native people and between Native Americans and the general public. A s the union has done every year since merger, SAG-AFTRA supported the summer series of conventions held by journalist organizations representing the industry's vast diversity. These gatherings afford the opportunity for aspiring and established professionals to support one another in their careers and provide a forum for educational development and building relationships. SAG-AFTRA's News & Broadcast and EEO & Diversity departments teamed up with local staff and members around the country to promote equity and inclusion in the workplace.
