Back to the CEO DEAN PHILLIPS REFLECTS ON HOW PHILLIPS DISTILLING COMPANY HAS MADE BEVERAGE INDUSTRY HISTORY SINCE 1912, AND WHAT'S BEING DONE TO PROPEL IT TO GREAT HEIGHTS IN ITS NEXT CENTURY by Elyse Glickman T hough other liquor industry giants have been splashier in the way they celebrate their landmark anniversaries, Dean Phillips, fi fth-generation CEO of Phillips Distilling Company, believes in the notion that it is better to show rather than tell. While celebrations on April 13, 2012 (the 100th birthday of the company) were intimate on-premise gatherings, Phillips stresses that the company is going big this year with its product launches and re-launches. "You have to know your past to create a path to the future, and our heritage of innovation is part of our DNA," insists Phillips. "If there is an overarching message, we want this anniversary to be an opportunity to honor all the retailers, bar owners, mixologists, restaurateurs, distribu- tors and professionals who have consistently championed innovation and originality. Anything we can do as a company to open channels to get interesting products to consumers serves us well as an entire industry." Future Dean Phillips is the fi fth-generation CEO of Phillips Distilling Company. 70 / the tasting panel / july 2012
