Esser wines, retailing far below $20, are served in luxury hotels such as The Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, The Wynn in Las Vegas and One&Only Palmilla Resort in Cabo San Lucas. Summerland's Bilo Zarif. developed a profitable wine import marketing business, Pieroth, before taking over the financially shaky Cuvaison Wine in Napa Valley in 1986. Under his guidance, Cuvaison became extremely successful. He sold out in 1998 to start Esser Vineyards. "With Manfred's background, four decades of making wine," said Calvi, "he is committed to the highest quality. But quality wines should offer great value, too, and ours do. We over-deliver; people are floored when they taste our wines." Thomas Mooney and Christian Krogstad of House Spirits Distillery were just in from New York City, where they'd prepared 450 cocktails the previous night at the trendy East Village bar Vandaag. They hosted an after-hours party that evening featuring cocktails made with their Aquavit, which recently won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Toward the end of the show Roberto Engstrom, Regional Manager of Prestige Wine Imports poured a taste of sparkling wine house Rotari's Chardonnay-based Talento Brut Reserva. He was very pleased with the way the event had played out. "There's no better distributor than Southern," he said. "We're with them everywhere across the country." july 2012 / the tasting panel / 119 PHOTO: SUZIE RODRIGUEZ PHOTO: SUZIE RODRIGUEZ PHOTO: SUZIE RODRIGUEZ
