TERROIR T en thousand years ago, Ice Age glaciers receded and carved the deep vertical chasms that today define the map of New York State's largest, most buzz-worthy wine region, the Finger Lakes. To discover its allure and taste the excitement first-hand, on June 9–10 over 40 wine professionals, journalists and educators descended upon the AVA as part of the first ever Society of Wine Educators (SWE) region-specific mini-conference. Dubbed the "Finger Lakes Wine Adventure," the event featured seminars, guest speak- ers and guided tastings of notable Finger Lakes Rieslings, rosés and sparkling wines, followed by winery tours along the scenic wine trails of Keuka and Seneca Lakes. Kicking off day one, Jim Trezise, President of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, utilized slides and recent data to detail the tremendous growth over the past 15 years experienced by New York State's wine industry: Since 2001, nearly 300 wineries opened, compared to just 114 between 1820 and 2000. Of the current 482 registered wineries, 119 call the Finger Lakes home, with nearly 10,000 acres (4,047 hectares) planted with over two dozen Vitis vinifera, native American and hybrid varieties. "The Finger Lakes is a diverse wine growing region with more grape varieties in one area than anywhere else in the world," noted Trezise. Riesling is king in the Finger Lakes, a point colorfully enforced by Stuart Pigott, acclaimed author of The Best White Wine on Earth: The Riesling Story, who presented "Finger Lakes Riesling from an International Perspective," A view of Keuka Lake from Dr. Konstantin Frank winery.
