She received a BA in translation from Hong Kong Baptist University and completed the professional certificate in interior and architectural design at HK Design Institute. For two years, she worked as a fashion show set designer for clients such as Ralph Lauren and Elie Saab, and her short film PLASTIC won an Experimental Film Competition prize at the California Film Awards. Below, left and right: XI YANG (Class of 2017) juxtaposed a location photograph with her pencil sketch envisioning how to turn a part of the AFI lobby into a steamship's boiler room for GHOST SHIP as part of a class exercise called Before and After. Ms. Yang is a multitalented artist from Harbin, China, who has designed short films as well as a feature film. Her distinct visual style has been showcased in books and magazines, and in film festivals around the world. She has a BFA in digital media art, an MFA in filmmaking and is currently working on her second MFA in Production Design at AFI. Right and below: EMMA SPARER (2017) is a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor of design in architecture. While working for nearly three years for Pentagram Design in San Francisco, Sparer assisted on projects ranging from commercial interiors, exhibition and installation design, to web design consultation. She also scouted locations for a video portion of a live theatrical production of ANTIGONE. Throughout these experiences, Sparer collaborated to maintain integrity to brand, concept and story, skills that she now incorporates with her passion for narrative filmmaking. Her inspiration board of clippings and a hand-drawn perspective sketch, colored in Photoshop, portray Mullet Fingers' hideout, a Chris-Craft boat in Coconut Grove, Florida, and were both created for HOOT.
