10 P E R S P E C T I V E | S E P T E M B E R / O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6 news HAROLD AND LILLIAN: A HOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY by Thomas Walsh, Production Designer The ADG Film Society's Hollywood premiere of Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story on Sunday, July 31, was truly a momentous occasion. Selected as the closing film for the Film Society's very successful eighteenth season, the Cinematheque's historic Egyptian Theatre was packed with many of Harold and Lillian Michelson's colleagues, close friends and admirers. Guests shared tears, joy and much laughter as they vicariously experienced film history through the life- journeys of one of our profession's most devoted couples, loving artists who were the life and career mentors to so many. Our youngest guest, a six year old said, that she loved the film, commenting, "Those people were SO in love!" A first-year college student left the film and said to his mother, "Wow, Mom, I really can do anything." Harold and Lillian is a fascinating and deeply moving account of the romantic and creative partnership of storyboard artist/Production Designer Harold Michelson and his wife, film researcher Lillian Michelson, a talented couple once considered "the heart of Hollywood." Harold and Lillian worked on hundreds of films during Hollywood's Golden Age, including The Ten Commandments, The Apartment, The Birds, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Graduate, Rosemary 's Baby, Fiddler on the Roof, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Scarface, Full Metal Jacket and more. Although the couple was responsible for some of Hollywood's most memorable examples of visual storytelling, their contributions remain largely uncredited. Through an engaging mix of love letters, film clips and candid conversations with Harold and Lillian, Danny DeVito, Mel Brooks, Francis Coppola and others, this heartfelt documentary chronicles their remarkable relationship and two extraordinary careers spanning six decades of moviemaking history. In celebrating Harold and Lillian and placing their under-recognized legacies into the spotlight, the filmmakers, Academy Award ® -nominated director Daniel Raim (The Man on Lincoln's Nose) and producer/editor, Jennifer Raim, not only honor them, but they have succeeded at also honoring all of our ADG members who work behind the scenes to visualize and bring stories for motion pictures to life. Above: Harold and Lillian Michelson were married for sixty years, one of Hollywood's most enduring romantic and professional partnerships.
