Summer 2016 The Costume Designer 23 Saturday Night Live "Host: Ryan Gosling" Tom Broecker and Eric Justian Broecker: The part of the job that keeps me inspired is working with the actors and helping them create interesting new characters every week. Justian: The live aspect of the show makes things very exciting. We often continue to change and improve costumes up to the mo- ment they appear on air. Also, the weekly schedule of designing and building everything in three days for both the live show and fi lmed pre-tapes keeps the process very fresh and new. SNL is quite an adrenalin rush. Dancing With the Stars "Disney Night" Daniela Gschwendtner and Steven Lee Costume Supervisor: Howard Sussman Assistant Designers: Polina Roytman and Karina Torrico Gschwendtner: Our show is so unique because there are so many inspirations: the music, the dancers, all the different celebrities with their different backgrounds, and we have great creative producers who are also inspiring. We work with amazing people who help us make our visions come true and that is very inspiring too. I feel blessed to have this show because we really get to express ourselves every single week. Lee: I get inspired by the feel of fabrics—their unique textures and subtle patterns, how they can be layered to create dimensions and how they move—especially on DWTS where movement of the costumes is so important to telling the story of the dance and music. I'm also in- spired when I watch the show live each week—it's that moment when I really see the scale, the hard work, and the collaborations of all the talents on the show come together. RuPaul's Drag Race "Keeping It 100!" Zaldy Goco I love that each Costume Design project comes with new inspirations and new teams of people to collaborate with. Working with an artist or with a new cre- ative team keeps things fresh and takes your mind into areas and infl uences that are either new discoveries or a new way of looking at the familiar. I've been fortunate to work with and be inspired by some of the most iconic musicians of our times, as well as with some of the most talented performers and athletes. I fi nd the whole process of design from initial concepts, research, and fabrica- tion, to technique development, fi rst samples, and fi ttings to be so inspiring, learning and fi nessing as you go.
