22 The Costume Designer Summer 2015 EMMY AWARD NOMINEES Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program Grease Live! William Ivey Long Costume Supervisors: Gail Fitzgibbons and Tom Beall Assistant Designers: Paul Spadone and Nanrose Buchman The further my career progresses, I fi nd it's the talented, smart, passionate, even sometimes quirky people I work with that are my biggest inspiration. I love what I do and have great gratitude that I am surrounded by people who feel the same. Together, we generate a simpatico camara- derie of talents to create the magical. I've made my career designing Broadway shows, so Grease Live! was my fi rst TV experience. When I got the call from the extraordinary writer/director Tommy Kail, my fi rst thought was, "I'm a virgin!" I'm also inspired by challenges, and Grease Live! was defi nitely that. It's a hybrid—a Broadway show shot in real-time in front of a live audience who became part of the cast, with a camera that never stopped fi lming. A per- fect fi t for me because I'm known for transformations in front of your eyes. The Wiz Live! Paul Tazewell Costume Supervisor: Rory Powers Assistant Designer: Rachel Attridge Illustrator: Shane Ballard I would have to say the top most inspiring elements of designing costumes are all of the different people and personalities that I come in contact with every day. From the directors, choreographers, and creative collab- orators, to the performers who wear my designs, to the stitchers and my team of assistants who work to realize the actual costumes, and all of the people that I come into contact with in the process of designing a project. It takes a lot of input to achieve a fi nished design and everyone that I touch and everyone that touches me along that journey is an inspiration. Secondly, I would say the ever-changing landscape of current fashion and how historic fashion infl uences contemporary fashion is a secondary inspiration. Grease Live!, Fox; The Wiz Live!, NBC; Dancing With the Stars, ABC; RuPaul's Drag Race, Logo.
