T he warm weather never quite leaves the South Bay, but once we squeeze through the summer solstice, things do change. The light shis, the days get longer, we spend a lot more time outside. And we also just end up doing more, including more outside physical activities. Here at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, there are many specialists who can patch you up if you get injured, but they are also concerned with keeping you out of the hospital! In "Get Down and Keep Moving" (page 40), our experts give you the secrets to staying healthy no matter what your sport; and on page 8 you'll find tips on training sanely for your first 5K or 10K race. "Straight from the Heart" on page 28 focuses on two crucial specialties of the Torrance Memorial Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute: the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), of which more than 100 procedures have been performed, and electrophysiology (EP), which has the distinction of being supported by the expertise of four advanced electrophysiologists— cardiologists who specialize in the electrical conduction of the heart and the treatment of arrhythmia. Both departments are leading the way for cardio patients—even high-risk patients—and doctors wanting to learn more about the procedures Torrance Memorial has been developing and sharing. Finally, check out the new classes and talks offered at the medical center, including a Reiki Exchange at the Health Education Center in Torrance and a lecture called Brain Therapy: Neurofeedback and the Mind-Body Connection. For more educational and entertaining ways to savor your long summer days, see our Calendar on page 18. Have a healthy, happy summertime. —The Editors HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME SAM MENZELOS | 1922-2015 Torrance Memorial Medical Center lost a great friend and supporter last year. Soterios "Sam" John Menzelos was an officer and trustee to the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Foundation. Through Sam's direction, the Vasek Polak Foundation supported many non-profits, and had a long and generous relationship with Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Sam passed away on December 31, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Fifi, children George and John, daughter-in-law Barbara, and grandchildren Arianna and Sam. He served with the United States Marines Corps during World War II and the Korean War. During WWII Sam was awarded the Purple Heart, as an officer in charge of a rifle platoon in Okinawa. Our community will miss his devotion and spirit. IN MEMORIAM
