Nationwide there are more than 86 events and 60,000 riders. is year the Torrance Memorial team signed up 60 riders and raised more than $17,500 to date. e ride includes distances of 8, 11, 32, 61 and 100 miles and crosses the majestic Gerald Desmond and Vincent omas bridges spanning Long Beach Terminal Island and San Pedro. Dianna Sorrentino was captain of this year's Torrance Memorial team. "Everyone is touched by diabetes. My mother has Type 1, and my aunt passed away from the disease," she says. " We form such a bond, between the riding , the congregating and the fundraising. And in addition to keeping us fit and healthy, the training rides really help create wonderful friendships. It's all a reminder to do whatever I can to remain free from diabetes." Torrance Memorial's director of interactive media Don Van Buren has ridden the 61-mile tour three times and says, "It's a great rideāso scenic and there always is great camaraderie.
