effects were combined with dialogue in what Bender termed a "super session." "All this ends up on my Pro Tools|HD sys- tem running the 256 outputs to their max," he explains. "I have my screen oriented vertically, not horizontally, so I can see most all of the tracks, and I go through and shape everything in this environment before I play anything for the director. I want to be sure it sounds how I'd like it to sound. When the director comes in, we'll spend several days going through and honing the material using the OMF dialogue and music tracks as reference." "I want- ed it to sound organic and intimate, so that we're close to the characters all the time," he observes. "There were certain set pieces, like the Mag Lev train, the Hover Craft, Katniss's fire dress and the tube that takes her to the game surface — all of which needed that special quality. The challenge was building them and getting them to sit in the scene without upstaging the characters. This is a movie that isn't a circus, it's more a documen- tary about a girl going through an experience. So we created these things to be unique but not to upstage anyone." Over the long months of working on the Bender wanted the film to sound organic and intimate, not like a sci-fi/fantasy film. film, the sound team developed a strong sense of common purpose.
