28 P E R S P E C T I V E | M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 1 6 I was retired and had "downsized" to a lovely spot in the mountains of North Carolina when I had the chance to read the first of six beautifully written scripts. I knew I had to design this show. Over the years, there have been a number of films and television shows about the Civil War but, rather than use ideas from them, I felt that I should start with an open mind, research the period thoroughly and try to imagine what it was like to live in the early Victorian era during the war between the North and the South. It was an uncertain time for the people of America— one day exhilarated by a victory in battle, the next plunged into despair by a loss—it all depended on which side you were on. But life inexorably moved onward and all Americans struggled to grow crops, tend their herds and keep their home fires burning, amidst the fighting and uncertainty. Photographs from both sides show a strong people, grimly determined and absolutely certain of their eventual victory. I found many beautiful chromolithographs of the period and carefully examined the palette. The same colors
