10 CINEMONTAGE / FALL 2015 by Tomm Carroll A s the current year winds down, and we approach the season of giving — and giving thanks — our thoughts turn to those things for which we are grateful. Granted, there are a lot of things in this industry, as well as in this world, that could — and should — be better than they are presently. But the whole point is to be aware and appreciative of what we have and do, not what we wished we had and did. And in our competitive and consumer-oriented culture, that is easier said than done. Whether it's winning a union contract, a choice position on a big-budget project, or an Academy Award, that is something of which to be proud; because, as we all well know, there are always those who are less than victorious in such decisions. However, although it's considered a tired truism, the old cliché, "It's an honor to be nominated," is in fact true. Just being in contention for the grand prize is a victory in itself — even if the New York Mets (or, for that matter, the Los Angeles Dodgers) didn't feel that way recently. As the old, but ever- youthful, philosopher Mick Jagger once said, "You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need." And though he's no longer with us, the soul poet Curtis Mayfield put it more succinctly: "You may not have a car at all. But remember brothers and sisters, you can still stand tall. Just be thankful for what you've got." Personally, I am very thankful for what I've got, and am honored that this very periodical you are reading marks the beginning of my 12th year of editing CineMontage (as well as its predecessor, Editors Guild Magazine) as the Guild's Publications Director. I'm also grateful for the support and guidance of the Guild's Board of Directors, as well as its staff and membership — and especially my Publications Committee — for entrusting me with this opportunity and responsibility. In addition, my gratitude goes to our talented and hard-working art director, writers, photographers, proofreaders and advertising sales team who help me to create and continue to build this publication (and its digital version) each quarter. And I am humbled by our reception in the labor community. After a two-year hiatus, following four consecutive award-winning competitions, we again entered the International Labor Communications Association's (ILCA) annual Labor Media Awards earlier this year, honoring the work in labor publications, Internet and visual media in 2014. I am pleased to report that CineMontage won two Second Place awards, and the Guild's Organizing Department won First Place for the Post, Proud video, produced and directed by our National Organizer Rob Callahan and edited by Board member and Publications Committee co-chair A.J. Catoline. This publication's awards included Second Place in Best Print Design for Local Union magazines for CineMontage MAY-JUN 2014 for art director Wm. Stetz, and Second Place in Best Cartoon for Local Unions for "Working in the Hazard Zone!" by our Labor Matters cartoonist, Keith Tucker. Congratulations to all.
