www.postmagazine.com 40 POST SEPTEMBER 2015 4K HDR AND CANON TO RELEASE 4K PROJECTOR IN 2016 MELVILLE, NY — Canon Inc. (www.usa.canon.com) has announced that it is developing an LCOS projector capable of displaying video and still images at a resolution up to 4,096x2,400 pixels with 5,000 lumens of brightness. This level of definition surpasses the 4,096x2,160 pixel-resolution of 4K digital cinema. 4K-resolution content has been gaining traction in various market seg- ments. Canon is leveraging its proprietary optical technologies to make its entry into the 4K projector market in 2016. The company notes an increased need for projectors that enable projection from close-range installation loca- tions. In response to these needs, Canon is developing the 4K projector as a new model within its REALiS series. The unit will achieve high brightness and ultra high-resolution, in a compact and lightweight body. Equipped with three ultra high-definition 4,096x2,400 pixel LCOS panels, the Canon 4K projector under development is being designed to support the projection of bright, high-definition content that exceeds the resolution offered by 4K digital cinema. While increases in brightness performance for projectors commonly require larger lamps and cooling systems, resulting in increases in projector body size, Canon's proprietary AISYS optical system delivers bright 5,000 lumens performance while making significant reduc- tions in body size and weight. Additionally, the projector will feature a newly developed 4K wide-zoom lens capable of projecting large images from a short distance, as well as an optical focusing function that enables the pro- jection of images on curved-surface screens. MODERN VIDEOFILM REMASTERS BRAVEHEART, ADDS TO TEAM BURBANK, CA — Modern VideoFilm colorist Bryan McMahan recently participated in a 4K/ HDR panel discussion presented by Key Code Media. The event took place on the Sony lot and gave McMahan (Knight of Cups, The End of Tour) a chance to talk about his experience grading with HDR display solutions, such as Dolby Vision and Samsung SUHD. McMahan recently finished the 4K remas- tering of the Academy Award-winning feature Braveheart, which included an HDR version as one of its deliverables. In related news, Modern VideoFilm has added to its team with the recent addition of senior broadcast colorist Wayne Hampton (pictured). He joins the studio after spending 16 years at Technicolor Hollywood, where he graded Criminal Minds, Big Bang Theory, Mom, and Two and a Half Men. His credits also include Lost, Ugly Betty, United States of Tara, and Army Wives. CONSPIRACY OPENS BOASTING 4K PIPELINE CHICAGO — Conspiracy (www. conspiracy.tv), a new, full-service production and post boutique, has launched under the leadership of John McGrath (pictured). The studio is located in Chicago's West Loop/Fulton Market neighborhood and offers an Ultra HD 4K pipeline from acquisition through offline and finishing. Over the course of 20 years, McGrath brought Avid, Flame, and other groundbreaking digital technologies to Chicago. As general manager/ partner at Cutters Studios, his oversight was instrumental in that company's success. His new partners hail from a mix of backgrounds, and bring skills in live action directing, editing, design and finishing. Joy Holbrook (above, left) serves as executive producer at the studio. Editors include Steve Stein, Carl D. Schumacher, Ruben Vela II and Nate Pence. Also joining the roster is a group of female filmmakers and media talent, including docu-style live-action director Ky Dickens, director of client relations Carrie Hunter and head of sales Amy McIntyre. "It's actually a really good time to open a new shop," says Steve Stein. "People know they can do a lot of this stuff on their tablets and phones, but they recognize creative talent and experience is what elevates their project above the fray. I'm inspired to help write this next chapter." Conspiracy is housed within a renovated shoe polish factory. The com- pany has already worked with a diverse group of clients, including agencies such as Commonground/MGS, Cossette, and Schafer Condon Carter. AJA LAUNCHES FS3 4K UPCONVERTER GRASS VALLEY, CA — At the IBC show earlier this month, AJA Video Systems (www.aja.com) debuted the FS3, the newest product in the compa- ny's line of FS professional frame synchronizers. The new FS3 combines AJA's frame synchronization with high-quality 4K up-conversion technology to seamlessly integrate SD and HD signals into 4K workflows. AJA's adaptive scaling algorithms, paired with its well-known conversion technology ensures that users' up-converted images will have the maximum quality possible. Input SD or HD resolution SDI via BNC or fiber and send up-converted 4K/UHD to multiple BNC and fiber outputs simulta- neously. The FS3 can also operate as an SD or HD frame synchronizer. FS3 also includes the industry-proven features included in AJA frame syn- chronizers, such as RGB color correction, region of interest scaling, extensive audio controls and routing, Web UI control, GPI triggers and more. "We've seen our existing FS products — the FS1, FS1-X and FS2 at the heart of hundreds of broadcast facilities, post houses and mobile trucks," says Nick Rashby, president of AJA Video Systems. "These products are true workhorses, incredibly reliable and can handle pretty much anything you throw at them. With FS3 we're excited to introduce an easy way to integrate SD and HD signals into 4K workflows. It's the bridge to 4K and UHD users have been looking for." The FS3 can up-convert almost any input HD or SD format to 4K/UHD up to and including 60p. 4K/UHD outputs can be 4x 3Gb SDI (level A or B), 2x 3Gb SDI (level B) or 4x 1.5Gb SDI. Inputs or outputs can be Fiber with optional SFPs. FS3 will be available in October at a price of $2,995.
